Ski Trips

From the President’s Desk

This winter has flown by and what a great winter it has been. With only one small bump in our
2009/2010 season our club has seen some great skiing. Mt Holly has truly outdone themselves thanks
to Bruce Firestone and Mark Tibitz’s great snow making and grooming. Mt Holly not only has some
of the best snow in Michigan the facilities themselves are awesome. Remember to support our local
resort by getting out and skiing with us on a Thursday night.

The 2010 Spring Election Banquet will be held on Saturday April 17th at Lucky’s Steak House in Fen-
ton Mi. Your board of directors continues to seek ways to provide the best bang for your bucks.
Lucky’s is known for its great food, large portions and believe it or not, a better price than last year.
We are still working on the menu but it looks like another sit down meal with 4 or 5 choices of entrée.
I sampled the Stuffed Grouper the other night and was very impressed, it was almost more than I could
finish but it was too good to leave.

The theme for this year’s event is still in the works but I’m sure with Bob spearheading the event we
should be in for a good time.

We seem to be having so much fun on the board that finding members to step up for positions is not a
problem. There may be an opening for Director at Large but we believe all other positions will have
at least one person running for them. If you are interested in running for the board please get in touch
with me so we can make sure to get you on the ballot. For more information on what the different
board positions are and what they do, go to the bottom of the page at this link,
http://www.schussmeisters.org/boardmembers.html or get in touch with me.

Our Club Championship race was a roaring success with 65 racers donning a bib. The top of Canyon
looked like a Monday night beer league event with racers lined up waiting for their runs. Skis and
boards waxed and ready to go the racers prepared for their runs, some smiling and joking while others
were deep it thought. It is plain to see that racing is coming back to the Schuss-
meister’s focus of attention. I see racing as a good growth area for the club, as
more people get involved more will join to put time in the gates and compete.
The party after the race was a real bash, close to 100 Schussmeisters packed into
the Lift Lounge for the free libations and camaraderie. 1st place trophy’s of etched
glass beer mugs for men and pilsner glasses for the women were awarded along
with medals for 2nd and 3rd places. The happy winners got a hug from Andrea,
Kim or Bob depending on their sexual orientation.

There were a few upsets in the race with some of the top snowboard racers sitting
down early in the course. After seeing Ray Persia’s runs I can see why they were
pushing it so hard, Ray finished with the 20th fastest time in the course for both
skiers and snowboarders, way to go Ray.

Other upsets include 2nd year member Sonya Pontack taking a first place in B
women on snowblades, this gal has lots of courage to race on those things. It was
not James Wheeler’s night. James, the fastest man in the club either didn’t take me
as a threat or held back for the old man on purpose, either way it was a true upset
for me to take a first in E men. I think he felt sorry for me and let the Prez have it.
Speaking of upsets for the 2010 season how about those bus trips?

With the Highlands trip having the best numbers it has seen in several years and now the Party on the
Hill trip being a double bus event I would say Lindsay has had a busy year. Way to go Lindsay
Schriner!

How about the new members this year, toping out at 55 makes for some good growth don’t you think?
What can I say, having a good time can be contagious if people get a chance to see it taking place. Keep
those smiles on your faces, coming out to events and most of all, telling people you meet about the best
ski club in Michigan. GO SCHUSSMEISTERS!

News To Note
STILL MORE HELMET USE -- WORLDWIDE

You’ve heard the phrase “Getting it through your thick skull”, how about “Protecting your thick skull”. A recent study showed that helmet usage among skiers and riders in the U.S. has risen 12 percent to 48 percent. Other data includes: 77 percent of children 9 and under, 66 percent of kids between 10 and 14, and 63 percent of adults over 65 all wear helmets. In comparison, only 25 percent of skiers and snowboarders wore helmets in the 2002/03 season. The annual demographic study is compiled from more than 130,000 interviews of skiers and riders nationwide. Helmet usage by skiers and boarders aged 18 to 24 is currently 32 percent -- representing a 78 percent increase in usage for this age group since the 2002/03 season, when only 18 percent wore helmets. According to Jasper Shealy, professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., who has studied ski related injuries for more than 30 years, recent research has shown that the use of helmet reduces the incidence of any head injury by 30 to 50 percent.

Lids on Kids, www.lidsonkids.org, debuted in August 2002 as a resource for consumers to learn about helmet use in skiing and snowboarding. The site contains FAQs about helmet use, fit and sizing information, general slope safety information, related articles and games, and testimonials about helmet use from well-known athletes, including US Ski Team members.
So the next time you hit the slopes, think safety first. Make sure that you and the members in your group are properly protected. A better time will be had by all.
